Visiting Broome with Children

Long renowned for warm summer days and balmy nights that make Broome a perfect holiday for honeymooners and romantics alike, you will find that Broome is a magical place for all the family, not to mention loads of fun.

You can lessen the burden of your next holiday by hiring what you need for the babies and toddlers thanks to the services of Cable Beach Holiday Hire.  Bulky items (prams, cots and car seats) are all available to hire, they’ll even arrange free delivery and set up to your place of accommodation.

Complimenting the host of tours and activities available is a broad range of free or low cost activities for the whole family.

Here is just a taste of what’s on offer;

  • Dinosaurs fascinate almost every child and there are many trails to explore. The famous 130 million-year-old Dinosaur Footprints at Gantheaume Point can only be seen at very low tides and will be sure to keep them amazed.

  • Whilst a full day fishing charter might be a bit much for the kids, cast a line from the beach, the port jetty, or hire a boat and explore the tidal creeks and rivers for a fishing alternative.

  • Do your children love the ocean? Many kids, depending on their age, enjoy sea kayaking.  It is a fantastic way to view some of the sea life around Broome.

  • The Bureau of Meteorology offer one hour tours, by appointment, informing people of the interesting weather patterns around Broome. You may even witness a data-collecting balloon being launched.

  • Make use of the parks and public playgrounds at Town Beach or Cable Beach Reserve.  Town Beach offers a playground, shaded bench seating, toilet amenities and somewhere for the kids to paddle in, the calm waters of Roebuck Bay.  Cable Beach Reserve has a playground, shady trees, toilet amenities and beach access.

  • Visit the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park at feeding time and watch your children’s look of surprise as they come face to face (but not too close!) to these ancient beasts.

  • The Broome Library hosts a variety of literary events, including Meet the Author evenings, book launches and Children’s Book Week: workshops, Children’s Story Time sessions for ages 3-5 years are held on Tuesday Mornings at 10.30am during school terms.

  • The Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre is open all year round and features a unique blend of wet and dry facilities and activities. Facilities include; Lap pool, lagoon pool, spa area, squash courts, tennis courts, netball/basketball courts, crèche/multi purpose room, cafe, first aid posts and skate park.

  • Follow the sign posted self-guided cultural walks of Minyirr Park through the dune system of Cable Beach. BYO water, hats, sunscreen and sunglasses and rest up in the specially made shelters as you read information plaques.

  • One of the best regional museums in Australia is Broome Historical Society Museum that features a display on pearling, shells and a large collection of photographs and literature that piece together the fascinating history of Broome.

  • Take advantage of the flat roads and beautiful weather and hire a bike to explore the town and the Cable Beach area. Child seats and helmets can be hired from Broome Cycles.  If you feel like taking the easy option, try an electric bike from Broome Scooter Hire.  Suitable for all ages, and you’ll be able to keep up with the kids.

  • Morning, afternoon and sunset camel rides are very popular amongst families; it is the classic Cable Beach experience.

  • Entertain the kids with a game of mini-golf at Palm Grove Caravan Park.

  • Let the kids be entertained by the bustle, buskers and beautiful sites and smells of Broome’s weekend Courthouse Markets.  The Staircase to the Moon is often complimented by local night markets – where you can sample local fare, purchase crafts and delight in talented local entertainers.

  • Manbana aquaculture hatchery and discovery centre, where you can experience the unique role the sea and inland waterways have played in the life and history of the Kimberley people. A series of fantastic aquariums and touch tanks allow you to see up close some of the many local aquatic species.

  • Do your kids feel the need for speed? Broome Trike Tours offer a variety of tours around the back of a Harley Davidson Trike or check out the Events page for details for the Broome Speedway.
