Tourism in the Kimberley has now received a major boost with the opening of $3 million Broome Visitor Centre.
The new Broome Visitor Centre was officially opened on the 12th of December 2006 by Kimberley MLA Carol Martin, Kalgoorlie MHR Barry Haase and Broome Shire President Graham Campbell.
The Centre has re-located to new premises at the entrance to Broome, on Broome Road just a short stroll from the centre of town and within close proximity of the airport. The modern and spacious building has been specifically designed to provide access to first-class information and service.
The architects, James Christou & Partners designed the building in keeping with Broome’s architecture and style. The roof structure is reflecting the heritage of the original visitor centre operating in a restored DC3 aircraft. Jaxon Constructions were the appointed builders to complete the project.
The three funding partners for the project were the Federal Government - Kimberley Sustainable Regions Project, the State Government - Tourism Western Australia and Local Government - Shire of Broome.
Tourism Minister Sheila McHale said “This is great news for tourism in Broome and Western Australia”.
“Broome is the gateway to our amazing Kimberley and plays a very important role in WA’s tourism marketing”.
“It is an iconic destination, with unique natural attractions which lured almost a quarter of a million visitors last year”, Ms McHale said.
