Irukandji Stings at Town Beach

Please be advised that we have had 3 confirmed Irukandji stings at Town Beach in the past three days. People are asked not to swim at Town Beach, whilst the beach closed stinger signs are displayed.

The following rules for safer swimming help reduce the risk of incidents involving marine stingers and should be promoted to the public

  • Always swim at a patrolled beach, between the red and yellow flags.
  • Look for and observe warning signs
  • If in doubt ask a lifeguard or Beach Inspector
  • Beware of the months of stinger season (higher risk period) in tropical waters (November - April)
  • Wear protective clothing, particularly pregnant women, the elderly and people with high blood pressure.

Stinger suits

Wearing protective clothing has proven to be very effective in the protection against marine stingers. Lycra stinger suits and wetsuits are an effective means of protection against a major sting from marine stingers (stings may still occur on exposed areas such as the feet and hands, but are significantly less likely). If stinger suits are not available long sleave rash shirts and panty-hose will also reduce the chance of being stung.

Cable Beach

Each year far fewer incidents of Irukandji stings are recorded at Cable Beach than other beaches within the Broome town-site. Cable Beach has a lifeguard service during the tourist season and a Beach Inspector service during the Wet Season. The Broome Rangers recommend Cable Beach as a better alternative during the Wet Season / Stinger Season.

More Jewels of the North West for Oprah

More Jewels from the North West for Oprah

Oprah stunned the audience at her second show in Sydney yesterday by offering them all a “Colours of O” necklace made up of diamonds from Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine in the East Kimberley.

Following hot on the heels of the gift to the audience at her first show of a pearl necklace derived from the waters off the North West of Western Australia, the North West region has experienced excellent exposure through some of its greatest exports.

Glen Chidlow, CEO of Australia’s North West Tourism, said “Two years ago Oprah gave the Kimberley a fantastic endorsement on her show, as being the stunning landscape that provided the backdrop to the movie Australia. Now she has followed this up with providing gifts from this spectacular region to all the audience at both her Australian shows.”

Oprah Winfrey is regarded as one of the most powerful women in the world, and positive product endorsement by her has proven to be extremely beneficial. Mr Chidlow paid credit to Tourism Australia, who brought the Oprah Winfrey Show to Australia, for their foresight in investing in this type of exposure. “The media frenzy that has followed the Oprah Show since it arrived in Australia cannot be underestimated, and should certainly have a spin-off for domestic tourism, as the coverage has meant that Australians have been reacquainted with some of the extraordinary holiday experiences that this country offers” said Mr Chidlow.

The Oprah Winfrey Australian shows will be screened in January, and they are shown in 145 countries around the world. Footage from the Australian visit will screen over 4 dedicated episodes.

Gift of North West Pearl for Oprah Audience

Gift of North West Pearl for Oprah Audience

Pearls from the North West were the chosen gift by Oprah for her 6000 strong audience, who today attended the filming of an episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show in Sydney. Oprah referred to a gift of a Kailis pearl pendant she had received, before wowing the audience by offering to share the same with all the audience members.

Oprah made special reference to the waters of the North West of Western Australia being the home of the oyster responsible for producing the wondrous pearls. Chairman of Australia’s North West Tourism, the Honourable Chris Ellison, was at the event, and said “Oprah’s gift of pearls from the North West provided an opportunity to promote the region to a huge international audience, not only in the USA, but in the 144 other syndicated countries around the world that receive the Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Glen Chidlow, CEO of Australia’s North West Tourism, said “it was a wonderful gesture by Kailis Pearls, which in turn has helped to provide excellent exposure for the Kimberley and Pilbara to a world audience.”

After the event, an invitation was extended to one of the organisers for Oprah Winfrey to visit the Kimberley and Pilbara when next she is in Australia.
