Staircase to the Moon  
Date: 8th to 10th July
Venue: Town Beach or The Mangrove Resort Hotel

This natural phenomenon is caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats in Roebuck Bay at extremely low tide, to create a beautiful optical illusion of a staircase reaching to the moon. Occurs March through to October.

Broome Race Round 2009

Saturday 4th, 11th 18th & Kimberley Cup 25th July.
Enjoy the races at one of the most unique race clubs in Australia. Races are conducted over the months of May, June, July and August with Ladies Day and the famous Broome Cup attracting punters from all over Australia.

2009 Kullari NAIDOC Festival  
Date: 5th till 12th July

NAIDOC Week preparations are underway with the National Committee selecting the theme:
Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth
The theme reflects the contribution of Elders to our communities as inspirational leaders and nurturers of young people. It encompasses the achievement of Elders past and present and looks to the future.
The 2009 National NAIDOC Poster Competition and National NAIDOC Awards nominations are now open!
  Take the time to recognise someone who makes a difference in the lives of others by nominating them for a National NAIDOC Award.

The National NAIDOC website has a new look!

 The 2009 Kullarri NAIDOC Festival showcases a vibrant mix of traditional & contemporary local Indigenous culture to a diverse audience of community members, visitors & tourists with over 1 week of exciting Festival events throughout the Shire of Broome. Traditional food tasting, cultural sharing, gala awards & Mardi Gras.

NAIDOC celebrates the survival of Indigenous culture & the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia. Everyone is encouraged to participate in NAIDOC Week activities.

BROOME SURF CLUB - SUNSET CHALLENGE 2009  
Date: 10th, 11th & 12th July
Venue: Broome Surf Life Saving Club

The Sunset Challenge 2009 is a major event on the Broome Surf Life Saving Club’s calendar. Over the years it has become a favoured carnival in which competitors from all over Australia can enjoy the mix of great, friendly competition and a visit to paradise itself.

The event will run over three days (July 10, 11 and 12). Activities to be contested will include all age groups including nippers, cadets, seniors and masters across many disciples of Surf Life Saving.

The Sunset Challenge 2009 will promote the Healthway message of good health, no smoking and strong participation.

The Sunset Challenge 2009 will also include a number of events open to the general public to encourage community involvement in the beach life and generate increased membership.

As well as competition of the beach, the Broome Club is also organising a great three days of fellowship and entertainment. There will be plenty of good food available at the club along with a fully licensed bar – all overlooking magnificent Cable Beach.

July in Broome is the peak of the tourist season so intending competitors and visitors are strongly encouraged to book early for flights and accommodation.

RELATIONSHIPS EXHIBITION - The Sisters of Saint John of God in the Kimberley  
Date: 17th March till 22nd October

This exhibition is held at the "Old Convent" in Broome and depicts the life and work of the Sisters in the Kimberley and the strong relationships that have been formed with the aboriginals since 1907.  Through photographs, artefacts, art, storyboards and audio visual you will be given the opportunity to experience the positive impact the Sisters have had on the Kimberley people.  There is also a huge photographic collection that is on a computer database that you will have access to. The "Old Convent" building is a fitting venue for this exhibition and you will see a real "Broomestyle" building with interesting architecture.

Stair Case to the Moon  
Date: March to October

From March till October each year you can witness a breathtaking natural phenomenon known as the Staircase to the Moon. This occurrence is caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide, creating the beautiful optical illusion of stairs reaching to the moon. This event occurs along the coastline of Roebuck Bay with viewing points at The Mangrove Resort Hotel, Town Beach & Broome Golf Club. Local markets held at Town Beach also compliment this event on dates indicated where you can sample local fare, purchase local art, craft & be amused by local entertainers.
